Competitor Intelligence Tools- 1. Web stats - posted by Gisela McKay
(I know I am breaking my own rule about the URL in the subject line, but this will actually be a thread of useful links.)

Keyword density, page saturation, and link popularity (I like this tool better than some of the basic ones because it gives you some context and checks multiple URLs at once)

www.marketleap.com/services/freetools/default.htm

A ballpark idea of how much traffic a site gets:

metricsmarket.com/

Check placement in both Yahoo and Google for a particular term and site:

www.1-hit.com/all-in-one/tool.ranking.htm

Actually, 1-hit has several useful tools including a dead link checker (useful if you have a links page, as opposed to links interspersed throughout the site).

If you are on your "do-it-yourself SEO quest" here are a couple of other useful tools:

1. www.gorank.com/analyze.php because being placed well involves a lot of jostling for position, this site lets you put in your url (rather, better still the top ranked site for the desired term) and it spits out a breakdown of how the term is used on their page, so that you can decide how to revamp your page to compete.

2. optimiser.123promotion.co.uk - put in a url and get a breakdown of basic SEO elements including avice on where you can improve the page.

There are others, but I am trying to weed out the useless ones for you.

Found two more good ones (I am in the process of writing an article on useful third-party web tools if you can't guess)

www.prchecker.info/ - to check the page rank of any third party website

and

www.123promotion.co.uk/link/index.php - to help you decide if you should buy a link from any given website.

pixelfast.com/overture/ - Scope out what people are paying Overture for keywords, as well as the popularity (handy tool to check both things at one time).

www.adsenseheaven.com/ - shows what the top paying Google keywords were for the previous month. Can work for both trying to figure out what ads would be worth on your site, and how much to expect to pay - relatively - to have an ad associated with a search term. If you are assessing how much you will pay, remember, these are the amounts paid OUT, not paid in. Expect to pay at least 2x the price shown...

Nifty tool that gives you a better idea of what a search engine sees as important when it visits your site:

www.stargeek.com/crawler_sim.php

Actually, if you really want to know what it sees, just view the source code (right mouse click and choose "view source"), but this gives you a sense of how much of your page is reliant on technologies the crawlers don't access.

Take a look at your web pages from a search engine's point of view:

spider.searchwho.com/

Find out who links to your site (and your competition):

linkpopularity.com

There's also EricWard.com for a blog on link building strategies as part of your overall plan to drive more traffic (and search engines) to your site.

(Just continuing the list of sites for SEO tracking.)

Ooo, I just found a new tool because someone (probably a competitor) just hit one of my sites with it:

www.iwebtool.com/domain_lookup

It took me about 3.5 seconds to use up my five free daily lookups, so be forewarned. (You can create an account to get extra, which it says is free. Haven't done it yet, though.)

Scope out your site and your competitions - just know that it turns up in the referrer logs.

... to mention that Yahoo has webmaster services following in Google's footprints.

If you aren't using Google's yet, you need a master account (same thing as you use for gmail and groups) then click on "all my services" (hidden in tiny letters at the top) and "Webmaster Tools".

It lets you see stats from Google's perspective - top search queries where your site comes up, and your position, and the top search query clicks.
